Stewards To Equal Educational Resources (S.T.E.E.R) is a project awarded and supported in whole or in part by the U.S, Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), administered in California by the State Librarian.

The project has various components to assist our community, Our goal is to provide services that improve our patron's  ability to gather and apply information that furthers their personal or family health and well being.  We asp;ire to be stewards of resources and provide equal access to educational course work that is inclusive of all community members.

S.T.E.E.R. provided empathy training by Ryan Dowd to bring awareness of the homeless to our staff, volunteers, commiunity members and partners.  NOW, we want to introduce UDEMY.  Learn and improve skills across business, tech, design, and personal interests. Connect to 3500+ on-demand video courses taught by world-class instructors. Courses cover the freshest and most relevant content on leadership and management, coding, design, marketing, IT operations, data science, project management, human resources, sales, accounting and finance, and productivity.

Career Online High School

Del Norte County Library, in partnership with the California State Library and Gale, part of Cengage Learning, offers adults the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certificate online through Career Online High School.

The library's program provides a limited number of scholarships to qualified adult learners who are looking to expand their career opportunities, prepare for workforce entry and continue their education.

Career Online High School through the Del Norte County Library is open to residents of Del Norte County. Applicants who successfully complete an online self-assessment and prerequisite course, followed by an in-person interview, will be considered for enrollment. 

Once enrolled in the program, Career Online High School pairs each student with an online academic coach, who provides the student with an individual career path, offers ongoing guidance, evaluates performance and connects the student with the resources needed to master the courses. Students will be given up to 18 months to complete the program.

Del Norte Reads

Del Norte Reads is a free library Literacy Program in conjunction with the Del Norte County Library District. We are a grant/donation funded program through the California Library Services and we receive donations and funding through various community partnerships.

Free Services @ Del Norte Reads Learning Center

Del Norte Reads offers numerous free services in our community:

  • Computer 101 - Learn basic word processing, online researching, web surfing, shopping online and e-mail. Other topics are available upon request.
  • High School Equivalency exam preparation for GED or HiSET
  • Literacy - Improve your literacy skills, all levels of tutoring are available.
  • Assistance with English as a Second Language
  • Basic ESL Resources (http://basicesl.learningsecure.com/access?k=526)*

* Basic ESL Resources: Basic ESL improves an individual's listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through a simple to follow, and instructionally proven curriculum.  Students learn English quickly and effectively on relevant topics including: family, home, school, and many other topics.  In each lesson students learn key vocabulary and how to use that vocabulary in conversation.  No computer experience is necessary.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many volunteer positions available through Del Norte Reads. Many volunteers tutor and many help with various activities and others help with office details.

Zip Books

....Your Library. Delivered!

 

What is it?:  Zip Books is a statewide project of the California State Library and Califa.  The Project is funded in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act. Zip Books is Administered in California by the State Librarian.

Requirements:

  • You can request 1 item at a time, up to 3 a month.
  • The cost of the item must be under $50 for print and under $75 for audio formats.
  • Must be available in Amazon Prime.
  • Must not be in Library circulation
  • Must not be paperback 

How to use it:

  1. Fill out the top of the Zip Book request form (Click the Zip Book Link below for a form you can print out).  Write the title and author, then mark whether you want Audio, Print or Large Print.
  2. Hand in completed form to the Del Norte County Library.  Once form is processed a Library staff person will call you and let you know when you should expect your book to arrive.  Please contact us if you don’t receive your books on the day estimated. Once Amazon delivers the item you have 4 – 6 weeks to read or listen before you have to return it to the Del Norte County Library.
  3. When you are done with your Zip Book please RETURN it to a staff member at the library.  You will then be handed a short survey which allows us to track patron satisfactory level with the program.  You can then do another Zip Book Request.
